about

Aterraterr is a first of its kind duo. Their music is inspired by soundscapes from the Apulian region in Italy, where both musicians come from. They use unique instrument combinations to open a new musical territory at the edge of early and contemporary music, free improvisation and complex rhythmic structures.

Giuseppe Doronzo: baritone sax, ney anban (Iranian bagpipe), bubbù (Apulian globular flute)

Pino Basile: tamburrello, cupaphon (tuned friction drum set), frame drum, bubbù (Apulian globular flute)

All compositions by Giuseppe Doronzo except for n. 5,8,9 by Pino Basile and n. 6 by Doronzo/Basile

“When one reads the band name like a ouroboros—the snake or dragon biting its own tail so that it forms a circle—the word terra (earth) can be read twice. Within seconds the music of Aterraterr forwards the listener back in time, to music that is completely fresh and, at the same time, centuries old. It knows where it stems from, but by no means wants to stay put. With the ephemeral musical instruments that have been made for, and are being performed on, the occasion of this recording, Aterraterr finds a common ground with the idea of sustainability, that is more and more becoming prominent in our thinking. Their take on this thought is somewhat alternative, however, the music makes it clear that it is in fact an old idea. But simultaneously the pregnant, imaginative playing of the musicians marks its urgency. So as much as this record is able to provide the audience with hours and hours of attentive but especially joyful listening, it is provoking them to think. The way none of the sounds are polished or otherwise smoothened, the way they force the listener to first adjust, get used to them, and once that happened, feel an inexplicable, but deep love for them. And there is the constant awareness that two people are saying deep stuff just by letting themselves go, by being free, but still have their four feet firmly grounded. This music is like an elegant, brightly lit place, and as vibrant as a poignant, lucid dream. But it is real.” (Mischa Andriessen)
